“Door een kuil te graven schep ik een berg”
Het principe is bedrieglijk eenvoudig: je haalt materiaal weg en wat overblijft druk je af. Michiel van Nieuwlands werken combineren een grote precieze ambachtelijkheid met het verrassende drukproces. “Een linotableau ontstaat door na iedere drukgang alle lossen vellen bij elkaar te leggen en dan te bepalen hoe verder te gaan. Met het strakke geometrische patroon als kompas ga ik op reis. Hoewel ik wel een voorstelling heb van waar ik aan wil komen is de uiteindelijke plaats van bestemming altijd ergens anders”.
‘By digging a hole I create a mound’
The principle of the linocut is deceptively simple: you cut out material and you print what is left. Michiel van Nieuwland’s work combines a precise manual elaboration with the surprising results of the printing process. “A linotableau is created by putting together all loose sheets after each printing and then rethinking how to proceed. I start my journey taking the tight geometric pattern as my compass. Although I have an idea of where I want to arrive, the final destination is always somewhere else.”
